Giggling Squid Crafts
Our very own Crafty Squid, Amber, has created fun and easy-to-follow arts and crafts activities to keep your squidlets entertained – and giggling – over the Easter holidays. Her inspiration? Our pretty botanical takeaway bags! So if you’re treating yourself to a ‘Giggling at Home’ over the hols, keep hold of your delivery or takeaway bag for the ultimate recycling exercise and make your own origami squids (how sweet are they?) and home decorations.
Craft 1: Origami Squid
What you will need:
- 1 Giggling Squid Bag
- 1 Pair of Scissors
- 1 Pen
- Google eyes & glue optional
Step by step instructions:
- Start by cutting a square from the Giggling bag (aim for 15cm-20cm²)
- With the pattern facing the table fold into a triangle.
- Unfold and repeat the folding in the other direction so you have a cross fold marking corner to corner.
- Unfold and fold into a rectangle, then unfold and repeat again so you now have a cross going from each side of the square.
- Next fold the right edge into the middle line making a smaller rectangle.
- Unfold and do the same to the top of the square. Once done unfold the corner where the previous fold overlaps, and fold the right side back into the middle. With the top right corner standing up in a triangle.
- Flatten this triangle by pulling the sides out making it a square layered on top of the folded sides.
- Now fold this square in half so you can start making the squid body and legs.
- With the little square folded into a triangle, fold the bottom right of the remaining square up into the middle crease making it into a point. And then fold the top half into the middle making a diamond shape.
- Unfold the small square/triangle and fold in the other direction so you can repeat the above process on the left of the squid. Once in a diamond shape you can unfold the smaller square so it sits above the rest of the squid.
- To make the legs fold the bottom of the diamond up to the top effectively halving the squid, and then put your finger on the crease line and fold it back down so you leave a little section folded (this makes the squid more 3D looking!)
- Then using some scissors cut the bottom diamond up to the crease making as many legs as you need (we recommend 4 legs as they can rip if you make them to small)
- Turn the squid over and then fold the legs at an angle at varying lengths to add the squiggly legs.
- Glue some googly eyes on, or draw them along with a big smile and there you have your own Giggling Squid.
Craft 2: Cake Bunting
What you will need:
- 1 Giggling Squid Bag
- 1 Pair of Scissors
- A pair of wooden skewers or toothpicks (depending how tall you want the bunting to be)
- Some string or ribbon
- Some glue
Step by step instructions:
- Start by cutting a strip from the Giggling bag around 5-10am thick, then fold this in half making it long and thing.
- Cut some triangles out along the folded sides to make your bunting flags.
- Glue or tie some string/ribbon to your sticks of choice to make the stand for your bunting.
- Unfold the triangles you have cut to make diamonds and put a thin layer of glue on
- Fold them over the string/ribbon and squeeze it so it sticks shut.
- Repeat the process and when done stand the bunting in your favourite cake pudding for a giggling decoration!
Craft 3: Paperchains
What you will need:
- 1 Giggling Squid Bag
- 1 Pair of Scissors
- 1 Ruler
- 1 Pen
- Glue
Step by step instructions:
- Start by unfolding your Giggling bag and use your ruler to draw ruler width strips up the length of the bag.
- Cut all these out, and you can use them as they are or cut them in half to make smaller loops.
- Glue on end of paper strip to the other making a ring, and feed the next one through and glue this making them link together. Repeat the process until you have a chain length you desire, or you run out of paper!
